Somerset East lies in the Eastern Cape, where the dry Karoo meets the mountains. From above, the town follows an orderly grid of streets laid out in the nineteenth century, with the Boschberg rising sharply behind it to the north. The slopes are wooded, which is unusual in this landscape, and streams run down from the mountain toward the town.
The town was established in the 1820s and still has many historic buildings, including churches and homesteads along its broad streets. It is part of the Blue Crane Route municipality, named after South Africa's national bird. Walking trails, waterfalls and a mountain drive on the Boschberg make the town a base for exploring the surrounding highlands.
