Spring Valley is a village in Rockland County, New York, about thirty miles north of Manhattan, spread across parts of the towns of Ramapo and Clarkstown. On a map it looks denser than the suburbs around it. Near Main Street the blocks are compact and fairly regular. Beyond them the roads loosen into cul-de-sacs and winding residential streets, the pattern of postwar Rockland.
The village is the northern terminus of the Pascack Valley Line. Its tracks come up from New Jersey and stop here, which gives the map a clear line with a definite end. Spring Valley is also known for its diverse population, including one of the largest Haitian communities in the state, and that variety shows in the shops along its main streets.
