Strausberg lies in Brandenburg, just beyond Berlin's eastern edge, and water and woodland shape its map. The Straussee, a long, slender lake, runs north to south beside the old town. The historic centre sits on its eastern shore and keeps remains of a medieval town wall. Forest closes in on several sides and gives the town a clearly defined outline.
The town is known for two unusual transport links. A small electric ferry powered by an overhead wire crosses the Straussee, and a local tram line connects the centre with the S-Bahn station, where trains run into Berlin. In GDR times Strausberg was home to the Ministry of National Defence, and the town still has a military presence today.
