Stromboli is one of the Aeolian Islands, north of Sicily, and it is almost entirely one active volcano. From above it is nearly circular, a cone that rises straight out of the sea. There is little flat ground, and the two settlements sit at the coast: the main village on the northeastern shore and tiny Ginostra on the southwest, long reachable mainly by sea.
The volcano has been erupting in small, regular bursts for a very long time. Sailors once called it the Lighthouse of the Mediterranean because the glow could be seen from far offshore at night. On the northwestern flank, the Sciara del Fuoco is a steep slide of dark volcanic debris that runs from near the summit to the water.
