Catania lies on the eastern coast of Sicily, between the Ionian Sea and the slopes of Mount Etna. After the earthquake of 1693, the city was rebuilt on a new plan with wide, straight streets, and that order is still clear on the map. Via Etnea, the main axis, runs north from the cathedral square directly toward the volcano.
The historic centre, built largely in dark lava stone, is part of the UNESCO-listed Late Baroque towns of the Val di Noto. At its heart, Piazza del Duomo holds the elephant fountain, the city's symbol. Lava from the 1669 eruption reached the sea near Castello Ursino, pushing the coastline outward. The composer Vincenzo Bellini was born here.
