Gozo is the second island of the Maltese archipelago. It lies northwest of Malta across a short channel, with little Comino in between. On a map it is compact and rounded, crossed by flat-topped hills and valleys, with roads fanning out from the centre toward villages and coves. Each village forms its own cluster of streets around a church square, spaced across the island like points on a grid.
Victoria, also called Rabat, stands at the centre. Its fortified Citadel sits on a hill, and its walls are clearly outlined above the town. The ferry arrives at Mġarr on the southeast coast, where breakwaters shape a sheltered harbour basin. On the north coast, Ramla Bay opens as a wide curve of red-orange sand below the surrounding hills.
The Ġgantija temples at Xagħra are among the oldest free-standing monumental structures in the world, older than the pyramids of Giza. On the west coast, the Azure Window, a well-known rock arch, collapsed into the sea in 2017, but the cliffs at Dwejra are still striking.
