Malta is the largest island of the Maltese archipelago, in the central Mediterranean between Sicily and North Africa. It is small but densely built, especially along the northeast coast, where towns merge into one another around a series of deep natural harbours. The rest of the island is a patchwork of villages, fields bordered by stone walls, and dry rocky ground.
The capital, Valletta, occupies a narrow peninsula between the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour. It was laid out by the Knights of St John in the sixteenth century on a regular grid, which stands out clearly on any map. Across the Grand Harbour lie the Three Cities, and inland the walled hilltop town of Mdina, the island's former capital, keeps a tight medieval street plan.
