Sue is a town in Kasuya District, just east of Fukuoka City, where the coastal plain gives way to forested hills. On a map the built area fills the valley floor and lower slopes, with streets following the terrain rather than a strict grid. Wooded ridges rise to the east, and residential neighbourhoods connect westward to the wider Fukuoka suburbs.
Like several neighbouring towns, Sue developed in the era of coal mining in the Kasuya field, and its economy was once tied to the pits in these hills. Today it functions largely as a residential community for people working in Fukuoka, while the surrounding slopes remain green and lightly built.
