Svendborg sits on the south coast of Funen, facing the narrow Svendborgsund strait. On a map, the town rises from the water in a series of streets that climb the slope, with the old centre close to the harbour and newer districts spreading uphill and along the shore. The waterline, with its quays, marinas and small inlets, gives the drawing a lively edge.
Across the strait lies the island of Tåsinge, joined to Funen by the Svendborgsund Bridge, which draws a long line over the water. Ferries leave the harbour for Ærø and smaller islands of the South Funen Archipelago, and the town has a long maritime tradition. The Svendborg shipping company founded in 1904 became the foundation of what is now the Maersk group.
