Taal is a town in Batangas province whose street plan still follows its Spanish colonial layout. Streets climb a hill from the lowland towards the church, forming a compact grid that loosens at the edges into farmland and small settlements. From above, the pattern is regular but not rigid, with blocks bent slightly to fit the slope, and roads running down towards the coast of Balayan Bay.
The town moved to its present site in the eighteenth century, after eruptions of Taal Volcano damaged the older settlement near the lake. On the hilltop stands the Basilica of St. Martin of Tours, often described as one of the largest churches in Asia, and around it survive many ancestral houses of wood and stone. Taal is also known for embroidery and for the balisong, a folding knife made by local smiths.
