Tanguá lies in the eastern part of the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan region, between Itaboraí and Rio Bonito. The municipality occupies a stretch of low hills and valleys, and its layout follows the terrain. The main built-up area sits in the lower ground, while smaller neighbourhoods and rural roads spread out into the surrounding slopes, separated by pasture and patches of forest.
Tanguá became a separate municipality in the 1990s, after previously being part of Itaboraí, which makes it one of the younger municipalities in the state. The BR-101 highway passes through, linking it to Niterói and Rio to the west and to the northern part of the state. On the map, the highway is the clearest line, and the rest of the town is arranged along it.
