Taraz lies in southern Kazakhstan, on the Talas River near the border with Kyrgyzstan. It is one of the oldest cities in the country and marked its two-thousandth anniversary in 2002. Over the centuries it has had several names, including Aulie-Ata and Dzhambul. From above, the modern city has a broad, fairly regular street grid, cut diagonally by the river and its green banks.
Taraz was a trading town on the Silk Road. Archaeological remains of the old city survive near the centre, and several medieval mausoleums stand in and around it. The best known is the Aisha Bibi mausoleum, decorated with carved terracotta, which sits in a village to the west. The foothills of the Tian Shan ranges rise to the south, although they fall outside the city.

Historic core
Near the centre, archaeological sites and older quarters break the grid. Their irregular shapes hint at the Silk Road town that stood here long before the modern plan.
