Tatsuno-kita lies in Nara Prefecture on the western side of the Nara Basin, where the flat valley floor starts to rise toward the hills that separate Nara from Osaka. On a map it appears as a residential area of closely spaced streets. Newer housing developments sit among older village roads and patches of farmland.
The rivers that cross the basin come together in this western corner before the Yamato River leaves Nara through a gap in the hills. Channels and small streams are part of the landscape around the district as a result. Where development climbs the lower slopes, the terrain adds gentle curves to the street pattern.
Hōryū-ji lies within a few kilometres. It is one of the oldest wooden temple complexes in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a reminder of how far back the history of this area goes.
