Techiman lies in central Ghana, in the belt where southern forest gives way to the more open savanna of the north. On a map, the most striking feature is the way main roads come together here. Routes from Kumasi, Sunyani, Tamale and Wenchi all converge on the town, and its streets spread out from that junction.
Techiman is the capital of the Bono East Region and is best known for its market. It is one of the largest in West Africa, and traders bring produce from the northern farms to sell to buyers from the south and from neighbouring countries. Market days fill the streets around the centre.
The town also sits in the traditional heartland of the Bono people, whose kingdom is among the oldest Akan states. A Techiman map poster shows a place organised around exchange.
