Tegal lies on the northern coast of Central Java, where the lowlands meet the Java Sea. The map is defined by that straight shoreline, a small harbour cut into it, and fishponds and river mouths along the edges. Inland, the streets form a fairly regular pattern of blocks, crossed by the railway and the main coastal highway that runs along Java's north shore.
That coastal road follows the line of the Great Post Road built across Java in the early nineteenth century, and Tegal grew as a stop on it and as a trading and fishing port. The centre still keeps colonial-era buildings from its time as a railway and administrative hub, grouped near the station and the town square.
Across Indonesia the name is familiar through the warteg, the simple warung tegal eateries run by people from the area, and through teh poci, tea brewed in a clay pot. The north-coast railway and the main highway run roughly in parallel across the town, two strong east–west lines that anchor the rest of the street grid.
Fishponds and river mouths
Along the coast on either side, rectangular fishponds and narrow river outlets create a pattern of small geometric shapes where land and water mix.
