Tewkesbury stands in Gloucestershire where the River Avon joins the Severn, and the town's shape comes directly from that meeting. Hemmed in by rivers and water meadows that flood regularly, it could never spread sideways, so the medieval core stayed compact and remarkably intact, one of the best-preserved in England.
On the map three main streets, High Street, Church Street and Barton Street, meet at a central cross in a clear Y shape. Narrow alleys run off them at right angles, packed tightly between timber-framed buildings. To the southwest the great Norman abbey and its grounds open up a rare patch of space, with the Severn Ham meadow beside the river.
