Thal lies high in the valley of the Panjkora River, in the Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The valley is narrow here, and the settlement follows it, with houses, shops and fields packed onto the flat ground by the water and onto the lower slopes. On a map, the river and the road beside it form the main axis, and everything else hangs off them.
Thal is best known as the gateway to the Kumrat Valley, the forested highland valley to the north that has become a popular destination for travellers in summer. The road into Kumrat begins here and follows the river upstream. Thal is also noted for its traditional wooden mosque, an example of the timber architecture of the Dir Kohistan region.

The road north toward the Kumrat Valley follows the river upstream from Thal, a thin line that tracks every bend of the water through the mountains.

Houses and fields fill the narrow strip of level ground, leaving the steep slopes almost empty on the map and giving the town a long, linear form.
