Timimoun lies in the Gourara region of the Algerian Sahara, on the edge of the Grand Erg Occidental. The town sits on a low escarpment overlooking a wide sebkha, a salt basin, with palm gardens spread along the slope below. On a map, the compact town, the irregular ribbon of gardens and the pale flat basin form three clearly separate zones.
Timimoun is often called the red oasis because of its ochre earth architecture, including buildings in a distinctive Sudanese-influenced style. The palm groves are watered by foggaras, underground channels that carry water from the plateau down to the gardens, an ancient system still in use and one of the best-known features of the Gourara oases.
