Tixtla de Guerrero is a town in Guerrero state, a short drive from Chilpancingo, in a high valley enclosed by the Sierra Madre del Sur. From above it forms a compact grid of streets around a central plaza, set on the valley floor with mountain slopes rising on every side. On one side lies a lagoon that fills a natural basin with no outlet.
The town is best known as the birthplace of Vicente Guerrero, a leader of Mexico's War of Independence who later became president; the state and the town both carry his name. The writer and politician Ignacio Manuel Altamirano was also born here, and the town is proud of both men.
