Todi sits on a hill above the Tiber valley in Umbria, and its plan is shaped by that hill. Streets rise from the lower gates toward the summit, where Piazza del Popolo opens out as the civic and religious heart of the town. From above, the old center looks like a knot drawn tight at the top of the slope.
The town is often described as having three circles of walls, Etruscan, Roman and medieval, each marking an older limit of the settlement. On a map these layers show as curving lines that follow the contours rather than any grid. Below the hill, the countryside opens into fields, olive groves and the course of the river.
