Toma is the capital of the Nayala province in the Boucle du Mouhoun region of northwestern Burkina Faso. It sits on the flat, open savanna, where fields, scattered trees and seasonal watercourses stretch in every direction. On the map, the town is a compact grid of streets surrounded by a much looser pattern of compounds and tracks.
As a provincial centre, Toma has administrative buildings, a market and schools, and its main roads connect it with neighbouring towns in the region. The surrounding area is mostly farmland, where rain-fed crops are grown and villages are linked by dirt roads. In the dry season those roads are the main lines drawn across the landscape.
