Tomaszów Lubelski lies in the far southeast of Poland, near the Ukrainian border, where the farmland of the Lublin region rises into the wooded hills of Roztocze. On the map the town looks compact. A central market square sits at the core, and the main roads leave it in several directions before the built-up area thins into fields and forest.
The town was founded in the early seventeenth century within the lands of the Zamoyski family, and its old centre still keeps the logic of a planned private town.
