Tomaszów Mazowiecki lies in central Poland on the Pilica River, where the Wolbórka flows into it. It developed in the nineteenth century as a centre of the textile industry, and much of the centre follows a planned, fairly regular grid that grew with the mills. The two rivers give the map its curves, with the Pilica bending along the southern side of the town.
Beyond the built-up area, the landscape turns to woods and river meadows. Close to town lies the Niebieskie Źródła nature reserve, the Blue Springs, where karst springs give the water a striking blue-green colour. Upstream, the Pilica widens into the Sulejów Reservoir, a popular place for sailing and summer recreation.
