Tomé lies on the northeastern shore of Concepción Bay in the Biobío Region, where coastal hills drop steeply toward the water. On a map the town stretches in a narrow band along the shore, its streets forced into long parallel lines by the slopes behind, with smaller neighbourhoods tucked into the valleys and coves.
The town is closely linked to Chile's textile history, with its woollen mills long shaping local life and employment. The wider commune also includes coastal communities such as Dichato, and a series of beaches and small bays line the shoreline, each drawn as a soft notch in the coast.
