Tordera sits in the northeast of Catalonia, a short distance inland from the Mediterranean, on the river that gives the town its name. The historic center clusters near the river, while newer housing, farmland and industrial areas spread out across the flat valley floor. To the north and west the ground rises toward wooded hills.
The municipality reaches all the way to the coast where the Tordera river meets the sea, between the resort towns of Malgrat de Mar and Blanes. On a map, the river's final stretch and its small delta form the clearest natural line, a long gravel channel that ends on an open beach. It also marks the traditional boundary between the Maresme and the Costa Brava.
