Triunfo sits at around a thousand metres above sea level in the Sertão of Pernambuco, which makes it one of the highest towns in north-eastern Brazil. That altitude shapes everything on the map. Instead of a flat grid, the streets bend to follow the slopes, climbing and turning around the hills, and the town gathers around a small lake that forms a calm, open shape at its centre.
The cooler climate sets Triunfo apart from the surrounding semi-arid lowlands, and it has long drawn visitors from across the state. Nearby rises Pico do Papagaio, regarded as the highest point in Pernambuco.
