Tromsø sits mostly on the island of Tromsøya, in a narrow sound between larger islands and the mainland in northern Norway, well above the Arctic Circle. From above, the island is long and narrow. The compact centre is on its eastern shore, the airport is on the west side, and the middle is wooded. A high bridge and road tunnels connect it to the mainland and to Kvaløya to the west.
Across the sound, in Tromsdalen, stands the Arctic Cathedral with its distinctive triangular profile. A cable car climbs the mountain above it to a viewpoint over the city. Tromsø is home to the world's northernmost university, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, and is known for the northern lights in winter and the midnight sun in summer.
