Troyes lies on the Seine in the Aube department, in northeastern France. Its historic centre is famous for its shape: seen from above, the outline of the old town, bounded by boulevards and canals, resembles a champagne cork. Inside, narrow streets of half-timbered houses wind between churches, squares and the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul.
Troyes was the historic capital of the Counts of Champagne and hosted major medieval trade fairs, which drew merchants from across Europe. The troy weight system, still used for precious metals, takes its name from the city. It was also home to Chrétien de Troyes, the twelfth-century poet of Arthurian romances.
