Tsukubamirai Map Poster & Print
Tsukubamirai was created in 2006 when the towns of Ina and Yawara merged. Its name means Tsukuba future and reflects the hopes attached to the new railway that crosses it. On a map, the city is less a single centre than a patchwork of older villages, open farmland and newly planned districts, spread across the flat land of southern Ibaraki.
Rice paddies cover much of the area, and their boundaries form large rectangular grids that are almost as striking as the streets. Rivers wind across the plain. The Tsukuba Express has brought planned residential areas around its stations, and their curving roads and regular blocks stand out clearly from the scattered hamlets nearby.
A Tsukubamirai map poster captures a landscape in transition, where modern suburbs meet farmland worked for generations. In black and white, the tidy lines of the paddies, the curves of the rivers and the new districts build a layered, carefully balanced image that looks quite unlike a conventional city map.
