Tsuma lies in central Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu, in the area that forms the city of Saito. It sits on low ground near the Hitotsuse River, which flows east from the Kyushu mountains to the Pacific coast. The map shows a compact town centre with a practical grid of streets, surrounded by rice fields and farmland that spread across the valley.
Just west of the town rises the Saitobaru plateau, known for one of the largest groups of ancient burial mounds in Japan. Hundreds of kofun are scattered across it. On a detailed map, the plateau appears as open land crossed by paths and roads, a very different texture from the dense streets below.
