Túxpam de Rodríguez Cano, usually called Tuxpan, lies in northern Veracruz on the Tuxpan River, a short distance from the Gulf of Mexico. The river is the city's defining feature. The historic centre lines its north bank, and a bridge and small ferries connect it to the opposite shore. Downstream, the channel continues towards the coast and the port installations near the river mouth.
The city also holds a place in Latin American history. In November 1956 the yacht Granma left from here carrying Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and their companions to Cuba, and a museum on the southern bank marks the spot. From above, the streets climb gently from the waterfront into a patchwork of neighbourhoods, with mangroves and lagoons spread across the coastal lowlands.
