Ubrique lies in the north of Cádiz Province, in the Sierra de Grazalema, one of the rainiest and most rugged mountain areas of southern Spain. The town fills a narrow valley and climbs up its sides. On a map the streets run in tight, curving tiers along the slopes, and limestone peaks close in around the built-up area.
Ubrique is one of the white towns of Andalusia, and it is especially known for leather craftsmanship. Its workshops have a long tradition of making bags, wallets and small leather goods, much of it for well-known fashion houses. The remains of the Roman town of Ocuri, on a hill nearby, point to a much older history of settlement in the valley.
