Ubud sits in the uplands of central Bali, and its map is shaped by water that has cut deep into the volcanic ground. Rivers such as the Wos and the Ayung run in narrow gorges roughly north to south, and the roads follow the ridges between them. The result is a town drawn in long parallel lines, with green ravines where one might expect cross streets.
At the centre, near the royal palace, Puri Saren, and the market, the street pattern tightens into a small network of lanes. To the south lies the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, a patch of woodland and temples that appears on the map as a clear break in the buildings. Farther out, villages and rice terraces spread along the ridges.
