Ust’-Katav lies in the Southern Urals, in the western part of Chelyabinsk Oblast, where the Katav River meets the Yuryuzan. The name itself means mouth of the Katav. From above, the town is stretched along the river valley, its streets following the water between steep, wooded hills, a shape typical of the old ironworks settlements of the Urals.
The town grew around an ironworks founded in the eighteenth century, which later became the Ust’-Katav Wagon-Building Plant, well known in Russia as a manufacturer of trams. The factory grounds remain a large presence on the map, alongside the railway that follows the valley. Residential districts spread along the riverbanks and climb partway up the slopes.
