Užice lies in western Serbia, in the narrow valley of the Đetinja River. From above, the town stretches along the river for several kilometres, with streets rising up the slopes on both sides. The valley walls are steep, so the built-up area stays long and narrow, and roads climb the hillsides in switchbacks toward the surrounding high ground.
Above the river stand the ruins of the medieval Užice fortress, overlooking the gorge. Just below it, a hydroelectric plant opened in 1900, built on principles developed by Nikola Tesla, and it was among the earliest of its kind in Europe. In 1941 the town was the centre of the short-lived Užice Republic, and it was later known as Titovo Užice.
