Vaalbank lies in the western part of Mpumalanga, in the area where the province borders Gauteng and Limpopo. Seen from above, it looks very different from a compact town. Houses sit on individual plots spread over a broad area, and they are joined by a network of local roads that is partly regular and partly shaped by the lie of the land. Between the built-up clusters are open fields and veld.
The street pattern shows how the settlement grew. Some sections have straight, evenly spaced roads that were clearly planned. Elsewhere the tracks are more irregular, following old footpaths and property lines. A few main roads cross the whole area and tie it to neighbouring settlements and the regional routes toward Pretoria and the towns of the Mpumalanga highveld.
A Vaalbank map poster shows this layout in fine black lines, with the gaps between them left white. Because the settlement is so spread out, the open ground matters as much as the roads. At print size, the clusters of short streets read almost like islands in the pale background, linked by the longer lines of the connecting roads. The result is quiet and airy.
