Valenza stands on a rise above the southern bank of the Po, in the province of Alessandria. On a map, its historic centre is a compact knot of narrow streets on high ground. It is partly outlined by the angular shapes left by old fortifications. Beyond that core, newer districts spread down the slopes and out toward the plain.
The Po runs to the north, a broad, loose line through flat farmland. It gives the composition a strong natural edge. Valenza is internationally known as a centre of goldsmithing and jewellery making. Many workshops and firms are spread across the town, although on the map that craft appears only as a fine, dense urban texture.
