Vanino sits on the western shore of the Tatar Strait, in Russia's Khabarovsk region, facing Sakhalin across open water. On a map the town has a clear logic: a deep, sheltered bay cuts into the coastline, and the town wraps around it, with piers, rail sidings and cargo terminals along the water and houses spread over the slopes behind.
The railway gives the place its shape. The Baikal-Amur Mainline reaches the coast here, and tracks fan out toward the port before ending at the water. A rail ferry has long linked Vanino with Kholmsk on Sakhalin, so the line continues across the strait by boat. In the twentieth century the port was also a transit point on the way to the camps of Kolyma, a history remembered in a well-known song.
