Vaulx-en-Velin lies on the eastern edge of the Lyon metropolis, on the flat plain beyond Villeurbanne. Its northern boundary follows the Canal de Jonage, a long, straight waterway built for hydroelectric power. Beyond the canal lies the Grand Parc Miribel-Jonage, a large area of lakes, woods and islands along the Rhône that the map shows as mostly open, watery space.
The town grew rapidly in the postwar decades, and large housing estates still define much of its layout. Major urban renewal projects have been reshaping the centre since the 1990s. Vaulx-en-Velin is also home to two higher-education schools, the ENTPE engineering school and Lyon's national school of architecture, as well as a planetarium.
