Venice is one of the few cities whose map is recognised at a glance. The historic centre is built on more than a hundred small islands in the Venetian Lagoon, pressed together so closely that they read as a single mass, roughly the shape of a fish. The Grand Canal winds through it in a reversed S, the main thoroughfare of a city where water takes the place of roads.
Look closer and the pattern becomes extraordinarily fine: narrow calli, small campi and a dense network of side canals crossed by hundreds of bridges. Giudecca and its canal
South of the main islands, the long, narrow Giudecca sits across the wide Giudecca Canal. It gives the lower part of the map a strong horizontal band.
Bridge to the mainland
The long, straight rail and road bridge across the lagoon links Venice to the mainland. It runs out from the compact island mass as a single line.
