Vercelli stands on the right bank of the Sesia river in eastern Piedmont, between Turin and Milan. It is often called the rice capital of Europe, and the surrounding plain is laid out in rectangular paddies bordered by canals and farm tracks. In spring the fields are flooded, and the city seems to float on a great sheet of water.
The historic centre keeps a compact, fairly regular street pattern inherited from its Roman and medieval past, and boulevards follow the line of the former walls around it. The Basilica of Sant’Andrea, an early Gothic church with Romanesque elements, is the city’s best-known monument. The cathedral library holds the Vercelli Book, one of the oldest surviving manuscripts of Old English poetry.
