Vernon occupies the northern end of British Columbia's Okanagan Valley, and its map is defined by water. Okanagan Lake stretches away to the southwest, Kalamalka Lake lies to the south, and the smaller Swan Lake sits just north of the centre. The town fills the valley floor between them, with residential streets climbing the surrounding benches and hillsides.
Downtown follows a compact grid near the valley bottom, crossed by Highway 97 as it runs north and south through the Okanagan. Beyond the centre, streets become curving subdivisions that follow the contours of the slopes, and the edges of the map dissolve into orchards, ranches and open grassland.
