Vigan in Ilocos Sur is one of the best-preserved Spanish colonial towns in Asia. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town mixes Philippine, Chinese and European building traditions: stone ground floors, wooden upper storeys with capiz-shell windows, and long streets of merchant houses.
The core follows a clear colonial plan. There are straight streets and rectangular blocks, and plazas beside the cathedral and the provincial capitol.
