Vikindu lies in Mkuranga District in Tanzania's Pwani Region, a short distance south of Dar es Salaam. Like many places on the edge of the city, it is growing fast, with new homes filling what used to be farmland. From above, its structure is informal and loose: a main road forms the spine, and irregular streets and footpaths branch out from it.
The map shows settlement still taking shape. Close to the main road, plots and lanes are dense. Further out, they become sparse, with scattered buildings, tracks and fields. The Indian Ocean coast lies to the east. The surrounding land is low and green, with coconut palms, cashew trees and smallholdings.
