Villeneuve-d'Ascq was created in 1970 by merging three villages, Annappes, Ascq and Flers-lès-Lille, into a planned new town east of Lille. Its map mixes surviving village centres with large modern districts, a network of lakes and parks, and fast roads that wrap around the neighbourhoods rather than through them. It feels less like a single town than a set of connected quarters.
Education and research are central to its layout. The Cité Scientifique campus of the University of Lille covers a large area with wide lawns and scattered buildings, and the town was served by the world's first fully automated metro, the VAL, from 1983. Stade Pierre-Mauroy, home of Lille OSC, and the LaM museum of modern and outsider art are also here.
