Visby is the main town of Gotland, Sweden's largest island, and sits on the west coast facing the Baltic. Its best-known feature is the medieval ring wall, roughly three and a half kilometres long and punctuated by towers, which still encloses most of the old town. On a map the wall draws a clear arc around the dense medieval streets and meets the shoreline at both ends.
Inside the wall, narrow streets climb from the harbour up a limestone cliff to the upper town. The ruins of many medieval churches stand among the houses, alongside the cathedral of St Mary. Outside the wall, newer districts spread in more regular blocks, so the boundary between old and new town is easy to read from above.
Visby was a major trading centre of the Hanseatic League and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each summer it hosts Medieval Week and the Almedalen political week.
