Vitry-le-François in the Marne department has one of the most geometric town plans in France. It was founded in 1545 by King Francis I, who gave it his name, to replace the town of Vitry-en-Perthois, burned during the wars with Charles V. The new town was laid out as a fortified square with a regular grid of streets.
The grid is still clear today. Straight streets cross at right angles around a large central square, the Place d'Armes, dominated by the collegiate church of Notre-Dame. The town was badly damaged in 1940 and rebuilt afterwards, but the Renaissance plan survived. Around it, the Marne and a junction of canals, including the Marne–Rhine canal, trace long lines across the landscape.
