Vredefort is a small town in the Free State province of South Africa, surrounded by open farmland and low ridges. Its street plan is simple and orderly, a compact grid of blocks with roads leading out across the countryside. What makes the location remarkable is the ground it stands on, part of one of the most significant geological sites on Earth.
The town gives its name to the Vredefort Dome, the remains of an enormous asteroid impact roughly two billion years ago and the largest verified impact structure known. Part of the dome is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around it, rings of hills and the winding Vaal River trace the ancient crater's eroded shape.
