Wegberg lies in the west of North Rhine-Westphalia, between Mönchengladbach and the Dutch border. It doesn't have one clear centre. Instead it spreads across a large area of fields, forest and small villages, each with its own cluster of streets. On a map this looks like a scattered, loosely connected pattern, with the historic centre as the largest of many small clusters.
The Schwalm river and its small tributaries run through the area. Over the centuries they powered a series of water mills, which are still part of the town's identity. From above, the streams are fine, winding lines through meadows and woodland. They often follow the edges of fields rather than cutting across them.
