Wellington Island lies in the fjord country of southern Chile, between the Pacific Ocean and the inner channels that ships follow along the Patagonian coast. It is large and almost entirely wild, a mountainous, rain-soaked landscape of forest, rock and ice. From above its outline is extraordinarily intricate, with long fjords cutting deep into the land and channels dividing it from neighbouring islands.
The island's eastern side faces the Messier Channel, part of the sheltered inland route used by ferries and cargo ships travelling between Puerto Montt and Puerto Natales. On this side lies Puerto Edén, a very small settlement without roads, built on boardwalks. It is home to the last community of the Kawésqar, the canoe people of these waters.
